The agony of constant concentration

I’ve been teaching my daughter how to drive a stick shift. She got frustrated the other day and asked, “Why can’t I just drive your car? With this one I have to concentrate and think about everything I’m doing all the time.”

Being black in America is just like this, constantly having to think about where we are, with whom we’re interacting, the posture of our body, the position of our hands, the tone of our voice, the list goes on… It’s too much to have to concentrate on and think about ALL THE TIME!

If racism can’t be outlawed, can blackness at least be legalized?
